Gathering Building Materials

Logs and sod were the main materials used to build an igluryuaq. Other materials that were required include clay for chinking between the log walls and roof, intestine from a bearded seal, polar bear, or some other animal for a window in the ceiling, and a caribou skin to cover a door between the interior of the house and the entrance tunnel.

Trees do not grow in the Arctic, but rivers that flow from forested areas further inland bring driftwood logs to some parts of the Alaskan Arctic and the western Canadian Arctic.
